The course starts just south of the lower parking lot on the dirt road running north south that parallels the asphalt walk and Old Hwy 55 and heads south to the double track along the southern property line turning east, then turn north to get on Twisted Sister, climb on Twisted moving northwest until the junction with D’s Chaos, take D’s Chaos to the water tank, go down the water tank road to the dual slalom course, go left of the dual slalom and descend down the knoll (the dual slalom is on the west and the 4x return trail is on the east), immediately after the knoll’s steep little drop make a 180 degree turn to your left (east) and start climbing up the 4x return trail, take this to the top of the 4x and then descend down the 4x and head toward the Kiosk and get on the lower trail connector then take a left to get on the short track trail exit left onto the lower trail connector, take this about 50 yards and make a 180 degree turn to the right to the middle tier of the velodrome, head back towards the Kiosk with the connector trail being above but parallel to you then get up on the big velodrome berm (you should be able to see bike tracks) take this across to the smaller berm that parallels the lower parking lot, and then up to the southern end of the lower connector trail, get on the cyclocross short track trail going clockwise, this will exit onto the dirt road, turn right (north) go about 50 yards and turn left and this will take you back to the lower parking lot, just before the lower parking lot turn left (west) and go to the start finish.

24 Hours of Old Pueblo

I kicked off my riding season under the warm winter sun of Tucson, AZ, at the 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo. The course was a fast 16-mile loop with abundant cactus, lots of twists and turns and a few rock sections. The loops lacked any prolonged, steep climbs which made it perfect for early season riding.. My lack of desert riding was evident by the number of cactus I brushed against.  After my third lap I learned to keep my knees and elbows in!

My team, Team One Potato, was able to complete 18 laps during the race. I only had one daylight lap and three at night, including the dreaded 5:00 AM lap.  Congratulations to Broken Spokes’ Chad Watson for taking second place in the Men’s Duo. It was great seeing Chad and out on the course. I also bumped into a friend from high school and a friend from the Trans Rockies. The racing community always gets me excited.  Now that I have the racing bug, I look forwarded to seeing folks out at the races. The first race in Knobby Tire’s Short Track training series is just three weeks away!!!
